Formula and Science

Metric BMI Equation:

BMI = Weight (kg) / [Height (m)]²

Imperial BMI Equation:

BMI = [Weight (lbs) / (Height (inches))²] × 703

Our system performs all math canonicalization in metric units. Height in feet and inches and weight in pounds are automatically converted into centimeters and kilograms respectively before calculations are made, preventing floating-point rounding drifts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple numerical estimate calculated from an individual's height and weight. It is used globally by health organizations as a quick screening metric to classify adult body weight into categories, helping identify potential weight-related risk profiles.

What are the limitations of the BMI calculation?

While BMI is a helpful screening tool, it has significant limitations: 1. It does not measure body fat directly. 2. It does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat tissue. Consequently, muscular individuals or athletes may register in the 'overweight' or 'obesity' ranges despite having low body fat. 3. It does not account for differences in bone density, ethnic background, or physical age. 4. It is not suitable for children, growing teens, pregnant or lactating individuals, or elderly populations experiencing natural muscle loss.

How is the healthy weight range estimated?

The standard healthy weight range is computed by identifying the range of weights that corresponds to a healthy BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 for your specific height. The formula reverses the BMI equation: Weight (min) = 18.5 × (Height in meters)² Weight (max) = 24.9 × (Height in meters)²
